Understanding DSCSA Requirements

Clear Guidance on Federal Compliance Standards

The Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) establishes strict requirements for verifying, tracing, and securing pharmaceutical products across the U.S. supply chain. At VRC Medical Services, we follow these standards with precision to ensure the authenticity, integrity, and reliability of every product we source and distribute.
Our processes are built to eliminate risk, protect patients, and support clinical operations that depend on fully compliant documentation.

Our compliance systems keep organizations aligned with federal expectations—consistently, accurately, and without operational delays.

Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) Compliance

VRC Medical Services operates in full alignment with the FDA’s Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA), ensuring secure, transparent, and traceable movement of prescription medications across the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Under DSCSA requirements, effective August 27, 2025, all shipments of prescription (RX) products must include serialized transaction data (EPCIS) and a valid GS1 Global Location Number (GLN) for each shipping and receiving location. These measures are designed to strengthen supply chain integrity and prevent counterfeit or diverted products.

Understanding Global Location Numbers (GLNs)

A Global Location Number (GLN) is a unique 13-digit identifier assigned to a specific physical location. GLNs allow trading partners to accurately identify ship-to and ship-from locations, enabling reliable product tracking, improved data accuracy, and end-to-end supply chain visibility.

Proper GLN assignment ensures that serialized transaction data is exchanged correctly and that all DSCSA records remain compliant and auditable.

Submitting Your GLN Information

To support DSCSA readiness, VRC Medical offers multiple ways to submit GLN information. Please select the method that best fits your organization’s workflow.

Note: Locations that do not receive prescription (RX) products through VRC Medical are not required to submit GLN information for non-RX supply purchases at this time.

Option 1: Submit an Existing File

If your organization already maintains a GLN file or internal template, you may email it directly to sales@vrcmedical.com. Our team will securely upload and validate the information within our system.

Option 2: Complete the EPCIS Data Form

For customers with one or a limited number of ship-to locations, our EPCIS Data Sheet provides a quick and efficient submission option

Option 3: Use the VRC GLN Template

Organizations managing multiple locations may download and complete our CSV template, then submit it to sales@vrcmedical.com for processing.

NOTE: A single GLN can only be used for locations with an address and name that are exactly the same in every detail.
If there are any differences in the company name or any part of the address (such as street, suite, city, or ZIP code),
That location must have a separate, unique GLN.

Important GLN Guidelines

Each GLN must correspond to a single, exact location. A GLN may only be reused when the company name and address match precisely in every detail. Any variation—such as suite number, street formatting, city, or ZIP code—requires a separate, unique GLN.

Maintaining accurate GLN records is essential for DSCSA compliance and uninterrupted pharmaceutical shipments.

Obtaining a GLN

If your organization does not yet have a GLN, you may verify existing numbers or register for new ones directly through GS1 US.

  • Multiple locations: Obtain a GS1 Company Prefix

  • Single location: Purchase an individual GLN
